The students completed their custom handmade scratch art in two weeks. The students absolutely loved this project! We discussed how you could just go buy it in a store pre made but how much more special it is to make it all by yourself. This proved that working hard will get them to the finished product. The first week the students followed Ms Kate step by step drawing out a vase. It's interesting to see their personal interpretation of what Ms Kate drew. Everyone's vase looks completely different from each other and some added special features to their vases to make it their own - that's what is so special about art. We then colored the vases using oil pastels. They were instructed to use as much color as possible on their vases while also learning how to blend with oil pastels which they found really cool. The second week the colorful vases were fully covered in black oil pastels. Ms Kate colored in the black for the lower grades since it can be very messy and takes a bit of time. Each student was handed a small wooden stick. They then started to scratch designs into their vases and started to see their amazing color come back through which they all found to be super cool!
